Our Firm Milestones
For Purpose Law Group was founded by May L. Harris, Esq., M.A., drawing on her background in law and nonprofit leadership. Established with roots in the University of San Diego’s Nonprofit Leadership & Management program, the firm began with a mission to provide legal, strategic, and operational expertise to nonprofit organizations across San Diego County.
FPLG established its second brick-and-mortar office in Laramie, Wyoming, extending the firm’s reach beyond California. This expansion strengthened our national presence and provided a strategic hub for operations, leadership, and client service in the Mountain West.
The creation of the For Purpose Foundation expanded the ecosystem to include fiscal sponsorship and philanthropic support. By offering an accessible pathway for emerging initiatives and funders, the Foundation empowers changemakers to launch, test, and scale mission-driven projects without the administrative burden of creating a standalone nonprofit.
FPLG launched Nonprofit Counsel with the debut of the Nonprofit Counsel Podcast and the publication of "How to Start a Nonprofit That Will Change the World" under Nonprofit Counsel Press. This milestone marked the beginning of a dedicated thought leadership platform, sharing practical guidance and inspiration with nonprofit leaders nationwide.
The launch of For Purpose Accounting (FPA) expanded the For Purpose Ecosystem into specialized financial services for nonprofits. Offering flat-fee accounting packages, grant-compliant reporting, and CFO-level support, FPA ensures nonprofit organizations have the financial clarity and confidence to grow, remain compliant, and achieve their missions.

Corporate Social Responsibility
FPLG doesn’t exist in a vacuum; we recognize that the firm is part of an interrelated system of people, culture, values and organizations. As such, FPLG consistently strives to make decisions based on enhancing and contributing to the well-being of our employees, our clients, and our communities. In 2021, FPLG established the For Purpose Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide scholarships and other educational support for native, first nation students.
Community Involvement
As part of our corporate social responsibility, we welcome opportunities to volunteer our time, contribute our expertise, and demonstrate our support. Each year, the firm participates in various fundraising endeavors on behalf of our clients, including running in 5Ks, sponsoring lemonade stands, or contributing financially to the causes our employees believe in.
