The Internal Revenue Service is supposed to act in a completely nonpartisan manner when examining exempt organizations, but now they’re in quite a bit of hot water for inappropriately flagging conservative political groups for additional reviews during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status.
Organizations with specific terms on their exemption applications including “patriot” and “tea party,” were flagged for review – and even asked to disclose their list of donors.
At a recent meeting of the American Bar Association, Exempt Organization’s Director Lois Lerner apologized, and stated, “that was wrong. That was absolutely incorrect, it was insensitive and it was inappropriate. That’s not how we go about selecting cases for further review,”
